I've been thinking about popping in just to say I'm fine, but I wasn't sure if anyone even remembered me after all this time. Thanks, draphy, for dropping me a comment to say people are still thinking about me!

Short story, I'm doing much, much better these days. I still have problems, but some of them have resolved in the only way they could; and others have gotten much better due to big changes in my lifestyle. Lifestyle gives the wrong impression, but I don't know a better term to use. What I really mean is that I've accepted the fact that I just can't work and live with autism at the same time, and I've chosen to live rather than to work.

I still have my personal EMC fantasies, and much to my surprise, I recently regained my writing mojo. Unfortunately for anyone reading this, I don't have my EMC writing mojo back. I'm doing some fanfic for...let's just call it a vanilla obsession. When I publish it on a different site under a different name, if you happen to run across it (which is highly unlikely) and think, "Hey, that sounds like thrall," I hope you'll keep the thought to yourself. Everyone who comments here has always been really good to me, and you know how I feel about privacy -- yours and mine. I wouldn't like that identity connected to this one.

And that's it for now. I might or might not regain my EMC writing mojo. Some of you will remember that I had several stories on the back burner when I left, and I still have them lying around...digitally speaking. At this point I can't say whether or not I'll finish any of them, but at least I'm doing fine. That's the important takeaway here.

It's really nice to know that some of you out there still remember me and wish me well. Thanks for that. It makes me smile. I hope you continue to smile too -- and wherever you are, I hope you stay safe during the pandemic and get vaccinated as soon as you're able.

thrallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01228794853493421326noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-540840190634112721.post-14172758077226946032018-10-14T16:09:00.000-04:002018-10-14T16:25:22.867-04:00How Transfixed Ends, Plus Some Other Stuff

It's time to stop fooling myself. I'm in no shape to write right now, and trying to keep myself accountable by posting blog entries and updates isn't helping. I hope that one day I'll be well enough to finish all these stories I've been talking about, but I don't think that day is coming soon, so I'm putting my blog back on hold.

However, I do feel responsible to all of you, particularly with regard to my unfinished story "Transfixed." I can't just leave you with that cliffhanger. Fortunately, I outlined Book 2 before becoming unable to write, so I can give you a synopsis of the conclusion. Then I'll wait a week before removing Book 1 from Amazon and Smashwords, in case any of you still want to buy it.

But there's one other promise I made, which I want to fulfill: sharing that hot-as-hell vintage EMC story by C.L. Moore, the author who wrote the mind-blowing "Shambleau." This story is called "Yvala," and you can download the PDF directly by clicking this link (I've downloaded many other things from this site, and as far as I can tell, it's safe). I don't want to say too much about "Yvala," but it does feature beautiful, submissive seeming-clones who lure two space explorers into a trap. If you like it and want to read more C.L. Moore, you can follow this link to the website where I got the PDF and type "C.L. Moore" in the search box. You'll be able to find works by plenty of other vintage authors here too, but you won't find any current writers. You also won't find the text of "Shambleau," but there's a link to a YouTube reading of the story.

And now on to "Transfixed." Note: I really am about to spoil all of Book 2 for you, so you might not want to read this if you don't already have Book 1.

Where we left off: Captain Michiko Sato (of the ship Ajisashi) has been enslaved by a spiderish/scorpionish alien race that humans call the "ticks." If a tick lands on a victim's head and spears them with its scorpion-like tail, it can then control them. The larger the tick, the more important and more powerful it is.

The ticks have both wormhole technology and biotechnology that gives them the ability to spear one ship with another without causing air leaks, and to create armor for their slaves made out of a gel produced by tiny starfish-like creatures. Jason Ellis, an assessor aboard the Ajisashi, has a crush on Michiko and was torn between trying to escape the ticks and trying to save Michiko. In the end he could do neither.

Meanwhile, Michiko was tricked/seduced into submission by her lover, Capt. Alec Stone of the Myrddin, who was already under the ticks' control. They had been torturing him for months by enslaving him, freeing him, and enslaving him again to milk him of as much mental energy as possible (They use this energy for fuel). At the end of Book 1, he's enslaved again and given a tiny tick, indicating that he'll never have free will again. Michiko ends up in a similar state as a result of the ruse used by the ticks to enslave her quickly.

While on the run, Jason hid in a walk-in refrigerator, where he came across a half-crazed Swede wearing a Myrddin biosuit. The man wouldn't give Jason his name or let him follow him, but he did tell Jason how to kill the ticks by shooting them at just the right point along their bodies. Jason was later able to free Chief Engineer Rebekah Bol using this method. They hid in a disabled escape pod just before the ticks used the Ajisashi and Myrddin to ram a third ship.

Before Jason and the Swede parted ways, Jason told the Swede about a hiding place he'd used earlier: an alien globe with a secret opening, large enough to fit one person. Something in the globe had given Jason a severe allergic reaction, and he had passed out for several hours, but he recovered.

Where the story goes from here:

1. Nils: The half-crazed Swede is Nils Madsen. He is a highly trained soldier from a fascist planet. He became disillusioned with the system and deserted, hiding aboard the Myrddin in a secret compartment in a shipping container. None of the crew knew he was there, so the ticks don't know about him either.

When he leaves the refrigerator, Nils heads in the opposite direction from Jason. He takes off his biosuit because Jason pointed out that it made him too conspicuous, something Nils was too far gone to notice on his own. Nils ends up hiding in the same globe Jason used; and he too, has an allergic reaction that causes him to pass out. He wakes up when the Ajisashi and Myrddin spear the third ship. Eventually we'll learn that this ship is a medical vessel called the Edward Sayers, and that it was responding to a distress call from another planet being attacked by the ticks.

Nils goes to the point where the Ajisashi and the Sayers intersect, and he crosses into the Sayers, hoping to find an escape pod that hasn't been disabled or booby-trapped yet. He runs across a small group of tick-slaves and fights them off, but in the process one tick lands on his head and spears him with its tail. This should bring him under the tick's control, but instead the tick detaches and falls dead at Nils' feet. Then he feels another stab as a second tick lands on his head. This time he seems to feel its thoughts for a moment: it knows it's dying. It tries to detach, but Nils is in a rage and holds it against his head, hoping to make it suffer more. Instead, the tick becomes catatonic and Nils realizes he can access its mind in full, just as the ticks normally access their slaves' minds. He can understand tick language and control the "starfish" that create gel armor; and more importantly, he learns that the tick Queen is hiding in another shipping container aboard the Myrddin. She's hatching more eggs, including more queens, in preparation for conquering a new planet. Nils still doesn't know why he's immune to the ticks, but he doesn't care; he has a more important mission now.

His original plan was just to get away from all the fighting and settle down on a peaceful planet, but now he knows the ticks are planning to conquer all of human space; their attack on the Myrddin was the first move in what's meant to be an interplanetary war. That means Nils can't find a peaceful new home unless he destroys the ticks before they get any further. So he makes himself a suit of gel armor, using starfish from the suits of the slaves he's defeated and making sure the armor keeps the tick attached to his head. He then tranquilizes the ex-slaves and locks them in a closet because he doesn't trust anyone but himself. He can't afford to have them running around loose later on and being recaptured.

He heads back to the Myrddin and finds the shipping container holding the Queen. It's full of slaves locked in orgiastic worship, and he has to get through them to reach the Queen and the eggs plastered to the wall behind her. He has a gun and a small blowtorch, but he has to leave them with guards at the door before he enters. Then he crawls through the crowd, pretending to be part of the orgy, until he reaches the Queen's dais. Quickly he rises up and, with one hand, chops the Queen's head from her neck. The slaves fall into disarray, and none of them try to stop him as he goes back for his blowtorch. He destroys all the eggs; then the Queen's body; and leaves. Suddenly he remembers that the Sayers was going to help another planet in distress, and he wonders what to do about that; but he just doesn't know.

2. Jason and Rebekah:
Like Nils, Jason and Rebekah realize their only hope for escape is to find a working escape pod on the new ship, but as they're walking toward the junction, they find a video screen playing Michiko's downfall over and over: it's an attempt to demoralize any remaining Ajisashi crew members. Jason is heartbroken but not entirely convinced that Michiko can't be saved.

They board the Sayers and head toward the escape pods, which seem to be in place and undamaged. But as soon as they open one, a tick that was hiding above the door drops down onto Jason's head. It stabs him but then dies and detaches. Jason and Rebekah examine it, trying to figure out why it died. Since it is dead, Jason has no access to its mind (and of course he knows nothing about Nils' experience). However, Rebekah retains a few memories from her time as a slave. She knows that whenever the ticks take over a planet, they destroy everything that might be toxic to them. From there, they deduce that Jason's bloodstream contains something toxic, and it must be unique to him since the rest of the Ajisashi has been enslaved. Eventually they think about the globe he hid in.

They go back to it and find traces of mold inside - then lots more mold on the currency that was extracted from it. They debate having Rebekah get into the globe so she can absorb the toxin too, but the process took several hours for Jason, and they can't afford to waste time. They know now that the ticks can be killed, and they want to save Michiko if they can, so they stuff two bags full of currency and hurry onward.

The most likely place to find Michiko is on the Myrddin's bridge; and they know, from looking out windows, that the three ships are joined in a rough I-shape. The Ajisashi has pierced the Sayers near its aft end, and the Myrddin is near its fore. That means they'll have to walk the length of the Sayers to reach the Myrddin. Their only chance at making the trip safely is to disguise themselves as slaves.

J&R ambush a small group of tick-slaves, sedating them and stealing their gel suits; but to their dismay, the suits won't stick to them (They don't know why, because they don't know Nils' story: it takes a living tick to command the starfish). Their solution is to use epoxy from a storage closet and glue gel and dead ticks to themselves. The epoxy's label says the stuff should be kept away from human skin, but Rebekah knows that it isn't deadly; it just causes slowly-building burns. The pain will be bearable, but they won't suffer lasting scars if they can remove the epoxy within a day or two. They do what they have to do.

Like Nils, they sedate the group they've ambushed and hide them in a closet; but unlike Nils, they don't lock the door. Then they move on toward the junction with the Myrddin. On the way they pass the Sayers' science department, where they find a scientist who's still free and tried unsuccessfully to hide from them. Her name is Dr. Faber. She examines Jason's blood, the currency, and the tick that died on him, and she confirms all their conclusions about the mold. Then she suggests trying to culture it and make an aerosol spray that can kill several ticks at once. The process will take a long time, so J&R leave her to her work and continue exploring.

They come to the hospital wing. It has large windows facing the corridor, and inside they can see several tick-slaves searching for people trying to hide from them. One of the tick-slaves is Alec Stone. He doesn't look as incapacitated as J&R expected, and the tick on his head is larger than the one they saw riding him in the videos. This suggests the ticks were tricking Michiko and her crew, making them think Alec wasn't as far gone as he seemed. They decide to rescue him in hopes that he can help them with Michiko.

Rebekah still has some memory of tick language, so she lures Alec outside, where Jason ambushes him and kills his tick. Alec is unresponsive. They take him to a nearby room, where they can lock the door, and spend a long time trying to wake him up. What finally does the trick is telling him that only he can save Michiko. He's still not at his best, but he can function well enough to help them, and he knows where she is. The ticks have stuck her to a wall on the bridge like a sort of trophy.

They go back to check on Dr. Faber's progress. The mold is growing fast and she gives them two aerosol canisters, but that's not enough to disable all the ticks on the bridge because it's a large space. Alec wants to attack right away anyway, to free Michiko, and Rebekah thinks of a way to disable the ticks while leaving the canisters behind. That way, Dr. Faber can make a stockpile for later use.

Rebekah's plan is to plant moldy currency at several strategic points in the air vents around the bridge, then turn on the ventilation full-blast. To do so, she and Jason and Alec have to split up, fake their way past several guards between the science department and the bridge, and crawl unnoticed through the air vents to the locations Rebekah described. They succeed, but not all the ticks on the bridge are killed; and when they open the doors onto the bridge, they have a brief firefight, which they win.

They pull Michiko down from the wall, and after a long time, Alec finally succeeds in waking her. Then the group begins planning how to free the joined ships and warn all human territories about the coming attack.

It's been a very Aspie weekend for me. The more stressed I feel, the harder I obsess over whatever I'm currently interested in. Right now that's The Try Guys, a quartet of professional videographers/performers (formerly of Buzzfeed) who make YouTube videos in which they try various experiences for the first time. They're famously willing to do anything, from testing makeup tutorials on themselves to learning ballet to swimming with sharks. In this video, they're exploring BDSM with the help of a professional dominatrix, and they've brought along some female friends.

A few things you should know, going in:
1) Yes, The Try Guys is a comedy series, but it's also about being open-minded and willing to learn. As they begin this experience, their attitude is playful curiosity. They aren't making fun of BDSM (In fact, you can tell that some of them really got into it - even the very straight-and-married Ned), although they do make fun of that book. As well they should.
2) None of the "couples" in this video are couples in real life; they're all just good friends.
3) Eugene is the only actual LGBT in the group, and he's also the most adventurous. I'd be astonished if he hadn't already experimented with BDSM before making this video.
4) Zach is my spirit animal.

In my last post, about actors who were genuinely hypnotized during their movie performances, I said I was reading an anthology of stories that were (very loosely) inspired by The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a silent movie classic. The film is mostly about a mad doctor with a hypno-slave (technically a somnambulist) whom he stores in a box except when he takes him out to kill someone. In case you don't know, "somnambulist" is a fancy word for sleepwalker; and Dr. Caligari seems to have laid a trance on top of Cesare's sleepwalking to make him a mindless slave. I find this especially funny because I used to sleepwalk. A lot.

Anyway, you'll find the movie embedded at the bottom of this post if you're curious, but right now I want to talk about that anthology.

I waited to post about The Madness of Dr. Caligari because I wanted to finish reading it and then decide whether it was worth recommending to you. Well, it is worth recommending, and you don't need to know any more about the movie than what I said above before you read it. Since the book is an anthology, the stories vary in quality; and not all of them deal with actual hypnosis or mind control - but several do, and a few of them are erotic enough (or nearly) to qualify for the EMCSA. Here are a few of my favorites - plus a few you should avoid:

"The Words Between" by Ramsey Campbell - Campbell is one of the best horror writers active today (and he's also a huge Lovecraft fan), so even though this story isn't technically about MC, it's worth reading just for the thrills and chills.

"Take a Walk in the Night, My Love" by Damien Angelica Walters - This is one of the stories that would fit nicely on the EMCSA if the sex was just a little more explicit. It includes genuine MC and a couple of neat twists that will give you a tingle.

"Conversion" by Robert Levy - a cruel and offensive story about gay conversion therapy gone wrong. Avoid.

"A Rebellious House" by Maura McHugh - McHugh is an excellent writer, and this story will push the buttons of anyone who (like me) gets off on the idea of catatonia and human puppets. It has a whiff of Lovecraft, too.

"The Projection Booth" by Nathan Carson - This story takes its inspiration from a very kinky, very loose remake of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari that was released in 2005. Seriously messed up, but in a good way.

"Bellmer's Bride or, The Game of the Doll" by Cody Goodfellow - Goodfellow is the second coming of Philip K. Dick, which is sometimes a good thing and sometimes a bad thing. This time, it's a great thing that makes his story the best in the anthology. It's all about kinky Nazis getting their due via tailor-made hypno-lovedolls; and the climax features all the brainwashing classics like flashing lights, subliminal commands, and programming through sex. Last but not least, this story really is explicit enough for the EMCSA.

"The Righteousness of Conical Men" by Michael Cisco - Cisco is an alien being who writes for other alien beings. Mere humans can never hope to understand him. Don't bother trying.

"That Nature Which Peers out in Sleep" by Molly Tanzer - Another tale that would fit nicely on the EMCSA. It's a classic "boy meets girl" story, only this boy is a closeted sub with a hypno fetish, and the girl he meets is more than happy to be his Domme.

"To See, to Be Seen" by John Langan - No actual hypnotism or MC here, just a very well written story that starts as a supernatural suspense tale and then warps into full-on Clive Barker-style horror.

Now, while I'm on the subject of horror, allow me a brief tangent so I can give a deeply heartfelt shout-out to the recently released Hereditary. This movie's destined to become a classic, right up there with The Exorcist, The Shining, and Rosemary's Baby. Don't miss it - and don't let yourself be spoiled by a single detail before you go. The less you know, the harder your head will explode when the twists come.

Now back to Caligari. Here's the promised movie, which runs a little over an hour. I don't know if you'll be interested in watching it, and I don't know what you'll think of it if you do watch it. Maybe if you liked Metropolis, with all its zany overacting and wild sets, you'll like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari too. Then again, maybe you won't. Personally, I found the weirdness growing on me until I ended up sitting through the whole thing. Your own mileage may vary. But even if you don't check out the movie, at least buy the book. It's definitely worth $6.99.

Some of you might already know about the Werner Herzog movie Heart of Glass, but I didn't, not until last night. I think I was searching for something related to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari when I stumbled across a reference to Herzog's movie. What I said in the title is true: almost the entire cast was hypnotized for the duration of their performances. Apparently Herzog chose to film the movie this way because he wanted stylized, inward-turned performances to reflect his story of a whole village going mad. You can watch the full movie on YouTube here, but I'm hesitant to recommend that yet. I've only skipped around in it so far, and it's really, really fucking weird. I don't know if I can take a whole hour and a half of lunacy, but I'm going to try it...later. For now, I've just enjoyed a few random bits of trance-face and statue-fication like what you see below. This clip shows the end of the movie, so if spoiler warnings apply for a movie which came out in 1976 and makes no sense anyway, then warning: spoilers ahead.

Here's all you need to know: the narrator in the clip is Hias, a mystic who's been watching the town go crazy without being affected by their madness himself (In fact, the actor playing him was one of the only cast members not hypnotized - to highlight his difference from the villagers). In the scene below he's describing their final fate.

Oh, and before I move on to another movie with a genuinely hypnotized lead: Yes, the island in that clip is Skellig Michael, a.k.a. Luke's secret hideout in the two latest Star Wars movies.

The second movie I want to talk about is the early-90's horror classic Candyman. I remember watching this in the theater when it first came out and thinking it was one of the scariest horror movies I'd ever seen. What I couldn't have known then - and what I only found out decades later when Callidus told me - was that Virginia Madsen performed all her scenes with the Candyman (Tony Todd) under hypnosis. Once again, it was the director's idea; he wanted to make those scenes extra surreal -- and it sure as hell worked. Candyman became a cult classic, and you can see for yourself what hypnosis did for Virginia Madsen's performance. When you watch this clip, you'll be able to tell the instant the director gives her the trigger word.

Oh, but I said something up top about The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, didn't I? Well, I'll keep this short since it's just a teaser for a later post. The original Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was a silent movie that basically involved a mad scientist keeping a hypno-slave locked up in a box and taking him out only for exhibits and for killing people. I first read about the movie back in my teens, when my MC fetish was already well formed, and you can imagine how excited I was by the storyline. Apparently I wasn't the only one. Recently I discovered a short story anthology called The Madness of Dr. Caligari, which I'm reading it now. It has Ramsey Campbell and a bunch of my new favorite Lovecraft authors riffing on the ideas of hypnosis, mind control, betrayal, twist endings, and all the other stuff we MC fetishists love. I'll blog about the book once I finish it, and although I'm only about a third of the way through, I'm already happy to recommend it to anyone else who'd like to check it out. It would be fun to get some feedback in the comments when I do make that post.
For the past several weeks I've been binge-reading stories from the Lovecraft eZine, an amazing (and free!) collection of Cthulhu mythos tributes from some really first-rate authors you've probably never heard of. I've already shared one treasure with you, a ghoulish gem called "The Secret of Ventriloquism," and here's another. I plucked this beauty straight from the ocean floor, and it's still dripping with lovely, phosphorescent slime.

Most of the stories in the Lovecraft eZine would qualify for a rating PG-13 or R if they were movies, but this one is very definitely rated X. And what else could it be, considering the topic? Some of you might have heard of the self-proclaimed "Stripper for God." Well, DreamShock gives us a stripper for Cthulhu, and wow is she good at making converts. She's also pansexual, so the fact that our narrator is female won't cause any problems when the "wave" rolls in. (I didn't make that up. It really is a wave.)

I hope you're not squeamish, because are lot of different sexual experiences in here, and some of them might squick you out. But don't worry; if you don't like what's happening in one sentence, the next sentence will probably set you back on track.

However, if "Dreamshock" doesn't sound like your kind of thing, just wait for next week. I have some more vintage EMC from the author who wrote "Shambleau," and it's hot as hell and not squicky at all.

I have a gift for you. From now through the end of May, you can buy any one of my books through either Amazon or Smashwords and get a second book free - and you can keep on doing it until you have my whole catalog.

Here's how it works. Buy any book you like and then email me. Tell me which book you bought and what day you bought it; then tell me which book you'd like for free and what format you'd like it in (.epub or .mobi). I'll email it back to you as soon as I've verified the sale.

NOTE: I can check my sales on Amazon or Smashwords any time I like, but the sites do not give me any information about my buyers. All they tell me is that someone bought a copy of, for instance, "Union, Reunion" on May 20. So please don't worry about me finding out any personal information about you. I couldn't do that even if I wanted to, and I don't want to. I am a huge supporter of online freedom and privacy. When you tell me what you bought and when you bought it, I'm only going to make sure a copy of that book really was sold on that day. It's all I can do, and all I want to do.

There's no limit to how many times you can BOGO ("buy one get one free") through May 31.

I'm not putting any requirements attached to these sales, but I will ask you nicely to leave a review beneath the books you read - and you can also recommend my work to a friend by passing along one of the books you bought.

Thanks!

Every new video by Janelle Monae makes me love her more than the last one. This video, "Pynk," comes from her just-released album Dirty Computer. The snippet up above is just a taste of what you'll see if you watch the whole video.

Oh, and if you're wondering where you've seen the lovely, long-haired lass between her legs, that's actress Tessa Thompson, most recently seen in Annihilation and Thor: Ragnarok. There's a lot of online debate about whether they're a couple in real life or just close friends, but they keep tap-dancing around the issue in interviews. I think they get a kick out of teasing us. I don't know the truth any more than you do, but I hope one day we'll see them come out to an event as a couple, dressed to the nines and both looking fabulous.

Until then, at least we have this video - and whole string of other videos costarring Tessa, all from Janelle's new album. You can watch them individually on YouTube ("Django Jane" is my personal favorite, second only this one), or you can watch them all tied together in an "Emotion Picture" with an accompanying storyline about a dystopia where people who don't conform are mind-wiped into placid drones. Janelle plays a woman fighting to resist the brainwashing process; and Tessa plays her already-mind-wiped lover who's now trying to soothe her into allowing it to happen - even as Janelle tries to restore her lover's memories. And if that isn't the perfect setup for an EMC film, then I don't know what is.

I'll link you to the individual video "Pynk" just below this paragraph; and then below "Pynk" I'll embed the entire Emotion Picture (called "Dirty Computer," just like the album). If you do watch the "Dirty Computer" video - and you probably will, whether you meant to or not - be sure to stick around through the credits.

One last thing. I'd warn you that neither of these videos is safe for work, but if you're reading this blog on the job, then you obviously don't care about NSFW tags. ;-)
It seems that somebody's had the temerity to turn Neil Gaiman's award-winning short story "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" into a film. Judging by the trailer, the film is going to be a very loose adaptation of the story; but it's directed by John Cameron Mitchell of Hedwig and the Angry Inch fame, so that gives me hope. If anyone can make a premise like this work, it's him. Plus we've got the adorable/slightly kinky Elle Fanning on board, as well as Nicole Kidman cosplaying an opposite-sex David Bowie from Labyrinth. Her character certainly wasn't in the short story, but the girl with the doubled middle finger was. Make of that what you will. Anyway, here's the latex-slick movie trailer, and here is the original (very funny) short story, which you can read online for free.

I've been busy and happy working on my next story, "Beware of Damsels in Distress," although it's taking time to rebuild my writing muscles. Fortunately, one thing that helps is all the reading I've been doing. Seeing some other writer carry out a great idea gives me more ideas of my own. I have several in mind right now, but I'm forcing myself to stay put on "Damsels" so that I can get it out to you as quickly as possible. I'm about 1/3 of the way through the first draft and will share some of it with you as soon as I think the time is right.

Meanwhile, I've been thinking of other things to blog about. Yesterday I planned to post on an upcoming movie that looks to be very latex-heavy, but I'm decided to save that one for a few days because I've just now found something even kinkier. The Lovecraft eZine is a wonderful source of short stories by modern-day Lovecraft fans, most of them really first-rate authors. And I've just finished a tantalizingly MC-tinged horror story that I can't help but share with you all.

I don't want to give too much away, but the story starts as an instruction manual for budding ventriloquists, then veers into the mirror-staring hypnosis we all love before finally revealing the truth of who controls whom (The controller is never named, but since it's clearly supernatural and this is an eZine dedicated to Lovecraft, my bet is on Nyarlathotep. It would be just his style.).

I should warn you that the final chapter is pretty gory, but if you can handle a few paragraphs of the red stuff, you'll have a nasty good time with The Secret of Ventriloquism.
Last night began writing again, working on the new vampire story I've told you about. I've changed the title slightly to "Beware of Damsels in Distress," which I think sounds a little more provocative. As I said before, this story is based on an unfinished poem - which was pretty obviously lesbian-erotic to begin with. It'll be easy to jack up those scenes from PG-13-rated to X-rated; and then, since the poem is unfinished, I can make the ending just as wild as I like. Which will be pretty damn wild. ;-P I told you about that dream I had, remember?

At this point, I'm thinking my next story after this will be "Dummy," a non-EMC story with roots in Lovecraft's "The Whisperer in Darkness." After that I'm going to try finishing "Transfixed" as a service to those of you who bought the first book expecting to get the second one pretty quickly. Then I'll just follow my gut instincts about what to do next. I told you I had a couple of other Lovecraft stories on the back burner, as well as the unfinished EMC story "The Power of Positive Slavery." And I totally forgot to tell you that I'm thinking I could easily rewrite "Spy vs. Guy" as a lesbian story rather than a gay male story. I'm not sure what I'd call it, though. Any thoughts?

Based on my poll, it looks like almost everyone would be willing to check out my Lovecraft pastiches, so that's good to know. Remember, I'll be posting them under a different pen name, but if you don't mind being spoiled about the author's real identity, you can find my other name easily enough. Just keep the secret! ;-) I want to keep my online identities separate.

I'll be writing the Lovecraft stories under the pen name M.K. Addison.

When I first came back from hiatus (not long ago), I told you I'd had an incredibly hot dream about vampires, and that I'd give you the breakdown in another post. This is that post, and besides the vampire dream, it's going to include my ideas about where to go from here - and how you can help me decide.

First, the dream. I was part of a vampire's banquet. I and several other people had been enthralled by a vampire who had undressed us almost completely. I was wearing nothing but an under-the-breast corset made of white rubber with artistic cut-outs. She'd programmed us so that the longer we kept our eyes rolled up, the more aroused we'd become, which meant we were all just wallowing in blind lust and seeing nothing around us. We lay on chaise lounges while our Mistress' guests - other vampires - came in. Some of us had been given special food or drinks beforehand to flavor our blood, and all of us were really just living bottles at a vampire wine-tasting: meant to be tasted and enjoyed, but not killed. We'd serve to this Mistress forever. First we'd be human slaves; and then, before we lost our looks, she'd turn us into vampire slaves. We'd never have free will, and we'd never be more to her than party favors.

Now, I can't remember whether I ever told you about a story idea based on a steamy-but-incomplete lesbian vampire poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. If his name sounds familiar, that's because he's the guy who started writing his most famous poem, "Kubla Khan," in the midst of an opium bender and then got distracted by an unexpected visitor. By the time he got back to his writing desk, he'd lost both his buzz and his inspiration. So that poem went unfinished too. Anyway, I think my first post-hiatus story is going to be an eroticized takeoff of Coleridge's vampire poem; and the climactic scene will be based on the dream I just described to you. I think I might use the image at the top of this post to make the ebook cover, but I'd like some opinions about that. Is it hot enough for an X-rated story?

That's my first question for you; I'll get to the others in a second. I hope lots of you will add comments to this post. Remember that my blog is set up to allow 100% anonymous commenting, and I don't censor anything except spam and troll posts.

Now, my next question is where to go from the vampire story (Which I think I'm going to call "Damsels in Distress"). I'm torn over several choices:

There's "Transfixed," which is still waiting out there half-finished on Amazon. I hate to leave the people who've read Part 1 hanging, and I do have an outline that will get me through Part 2, but I think this is going to be a "heavy lifting" project. That's one of the reasons I wanted to start with something short and new first, to get my mojo working again.

Another option for my second project is "The Power of Positive Slavery," which I've teased here before and which is sitting half-written on my laptop. But again, with this one, I feel like it's going to be heavy lifting...and at least I haven't published anything on it yet, so I don't have to worry about anyone fretting over cliffhangers.

Another choice would be to start in a new direction after "Damsels in Distress," writing Lovecraft mythos stories under a different pen name (which you'll be able to discover if you read my future posts carefully). I have three stories in mind so far. They'll be horror with a bit of humor and/or some eros - but no actual erotica. Under the US movie rating system, they'd be classified as PG-13 or R. I've planned out one of these stories (working title: "Dummy") very thoroughly already, and it's practically screaming at me to start writing it now. Actually, I wish I could write it alongside "Damsels in Distress," but I'm not good at juggling two projects at once; and I figure I'd better start with a sure success rather than something experimental.

Besides "Dummy," these are the two other Lovecraft stories I have in mind. One is based on "The Mound," but told from the point of view of the pervy humans who served as the villains in the original story. This story would definitely involve some eros (and suggestions of orgies). The other story is actually based on the "King in Yellow" series (written by Robert Chambers) which were written before Lovecraft started his career and greatly influenced his mythology. If you want a taste of how freaky the King in Yellow stories areyou can read The Yellow Sign here. Actually, all Robert Chambers' writings are in the public domain now, but "The Yellow Sign" is the best one to start with. Then, if you like that, check out "The Repairer of Reputations" next.

Now here's my last question. I'd like to know whether fans of my EMC erotica would be interested in reading non-EMC Lovecraft mythos stories by me, so I'm setting up a simple poll in the sidebar up top. Please take a moment to tick a box - and again, please add some comments below.
Thanks!

Usually I try to think of a catchy title for each post, but I figured that with this one, the catchiest title is the simple truth. Last week Callidus and I each saw Annihilation in our separate hometowns, and then we got together on Skype to discuss it. He's just posted the podcast (which runs just over one hour), on his website, and you can listen to it here.

Stay tuned for more posts about my writing plans for the future and how you can help me decide where to go from here.

Hello again, everyone. Some of my problems are beginning to resolve, and the writing bug is biting again - just nibbling right now, but I think it's going to start chomping in earnest pretty soon. I'll be sure to keep you updated as I start writing again. Oh, and I also had a truly mind-blowing vampire dream last week that I have to tell you about because it's just too hot to keep to myself.

But this post is about a new podcast I literally just finished recording with Callidus. When he first interviewed me for his show The Black Room a couple of years ago, we talked about Annihilation, a book we'd both enjoyed which was - at that point - in pre-production to become a movie. Back then, we talked about how much fun it would be if we could see it together and record a podcast about it afterwards, and we sort of managed to do that. We didn't get to meet in person, but we did watch the movie at the same time in our separate hometowns and then got right onto Skype to compare notes. I don't want to spoil anything for those of you waiting for the podcast, but I can tell you that we both loved the movie - although we each had different small issues with it - and that we had lots to discuss. This is one of those "watercooler" movies that people will be arguing about for years.

Unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties with the recording - which Callidus can certainly work out - but the release of the podcast might be delayed a bit while he does his magic. In the meantime, you can look forward to that post about my vampire dream and more posts about where my writing is headed.

And to whet your appetites about the movie, here's a sinister little clip where Natalie Portman's husband (Oscar Isaac) comes home and he's not...exactly...himself...
You've probably noticed that my posts have become fewer and farther between; and if you've been following my blog for a while, you know I'm struggling with some very serious and painful real-life issues. I'm not the kind to spill my guts all over the internet, but if I did, the result would look like a scene from Brain Dead. It's bad.

I've been struggling to write despite everything, but it's been like winching words out of a hole that goes down for miles. It's just become impossible. I'm going to have to take a break until things resolve - which will take some time. For those of you waiting on the Transfixed sequel and The Power of Positive Slavery, I'm sorry, but you're going to have a longer wait than any of us anticipated.

Please keep a kind thought for me as I go through all this.

I'm not talking about the one in the video below, which I'll get to in a moment. I'm talking about the one in the Easter egg plotline of What Do You Give the Alien Who Has Everything? In case you've forgotten (or never knew, in which case, shame on you!), there is a giant hidden plotline in my Choose Your Own Adventure, one which takes the story in a completely new direction. I know some of you have found it on your own, and some of you found it after I dropped a big hint about the lily pond. Others, I'm sure, will do a search now that I've given you the keyword; but that won't take you to the starting point of the Easter egg, and you'll just end up wondering what the hell is going on. When I wrote the CYOA, I intentionally jumbled up the sections so that you can't just read straight through the book.

Anyway, watching this video brought my lionfish to mind, which made me think of my story and also prompted me to tell you about a lunatic named Coyote Peterson (not his real name, as if you couldn't have guessed). You might know of him already; but if you don't, his Flickr account says he's "an adventurer and extreme field zoologist" - which doesn't make him a real zoologist. As as far as I can tell from a quick Google search, his only degree is in filmmaking. He uses that skill to record himself getting bitten and stung by horrible, painful creatures of all types and then shares the results on YouTube. It's kind of like a classier version of Jackass.

But even though I'm taking the piss out of this guy, I do enjoy his videos. The stings and bites are real, and he's not afraid to show you how scared he is beforehand or how much pain he's in afterwards (He might exaggerate some things, but you can't exaggerate a shock-pale face or a red and swollen entry point. Plus, the bites and stings are all filmed clearly and in closeup). So far his biggest challenge was the bullet ant, so the lionfish is a pretty big letdown after that; but the video below will still give you a taste of his style and a link to the bullet ant video in the sidebar. It'll also show you what a real lionfish looks like. Mine's a little different. ;-)

A few days ago I had the extreme pleasure of watching The Handmaiden, the latest movie from Oldboy director Park Chan-Wook. Now, I haven't seen Oldboy (I've read the spoiler, and now I don't want to see it), but I know Park has a reputation for shocks and cinematic gore. Well, this movie is light on the gore, but it is beautifully filmed and there are plenty of shocks - plus an octopus, for those of you who like that sort of thing.

The basic plot is is. A conman selects a pretty young pickpocket to help him separate an heiress from her money. The heiress has been raised by a cruel and kinky uncle who trains her to read BDSM porn to groups of horny businessmen for profit. His profit. He plans to marry her later and take all her money. But the pickpocket's job is to convince the heiress that she should elope with the conman instead. After that, he says, he'll have her committed to a madhouse and give the pickpocket a cut of the money. But this movie is based on the English novel Fingersmith, written by the author of Tipping the Velvet, so you know the heiress won't fall for the conman. She'll fall for the pickpocket, and that will lead to all kinds of interesting developments. Lovely sex scenes, too. Lovely, lovely sex scenes.

I'll say no more about the plot, because it's too full of surprises to spoil. But I will say that the movie is available on Netflix. ;-)

Remember the book Annihilation, which I've raved about several times on this blog? I even included some lengthy quotes to demonstrate just how heavily it relied on MC and non-consensual hypnosis. I loved it and recommend it highly. I also discussed the story at length in my podcast interview with Callidus (Start at 1:00:26) because we'd recently learned that it was going to be adapted into a movie by Alex Garland of Ex Machina, 28 Days Later, and Dredd fame.

But after the news that Garland was making a movie, there came a long stretch where we heard nothing but crickets. Fortunately, Paramount has finally released a few snippets of footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Don't ask me why they chose that con. In fact, if you know why they chose that con, tell me. (Better still, if you were there, give us all a full report!)

Anyway, it really was just snippets, but even the people who hadn't read the book and didn't know what they were looking at still came away excited. I'd hoped the footage would find its way online, but it hasn't; all I've seen are lots of articles describing that footage. io9 has the best, most MC-ish take, so that's the one I'll quote from:

The setting is a typical suburban house. Inside it is Natalie
Portman’s character, and she’s crying. She’s lost someone and seems to
be packing up or fixing the house to move out. Then, a man starts to
walk up the stairs. It’s Oscar Isaac’s character, who just so happens to
be the man Portman thought was dead. She’s stunned, excited, confused,
and runs up to kiss him. But he’s almost not there. Unaware. Cold. Not
kissing her back.

We
move downstairs to the kitchen table where Isaac is sitting absolutely
still with a full glass of water in front of him. She explains that he’s
been missing for a year. No one knew where he was or what happened. He
just disappeared. She asks if his mission was covert and he says
“Maybe,” then “Yes.” She asks where he was and he says he doesn’t know
where he was. “How is that possible?” she asks. “You must be able to
tell me something,” she adds, now getting frustrated. “Does it matter?”
he asks in a super creepy way. That shakes her but, finally, he’s about
to open up.

“I was outside the room. The room with the bed. I saw
you and recognized you. I recognized your face,” he says, which is very
confusing to everyone. He takes a sip of water and says he’s not feeling
well, which is when we see the blood. Portman’s character calls and
ambulance and they’re off to the hospital. Isaac is convulsing,
obviously very sick, and then three black SUVs stop the ambulance.
They
break in, take them both out, and knock out Portman. She wakes up in
some kind of hospital or prison with Jennifer Jason Leigh’s character.
“Where’s my husband, I want to see a lawyer!” she says. We get a quick
shot of Isaac’s character and it looks like he has silver makeup around
his eyes in the hospital. Finally, Leigh’s character tells Portman’s
what going on.

She explains there was an event. Maybe religious,
maybe alien, they don’t know. Now there’s a mysterious area of the
planet. They keep sending people there but no one has come back, she
explains. “Now something has,” Portman says, referring to Isaac. “I need
to know what’s inside.”
Portman then joins a team as they head
into the area. This is when the footage sped up, mostly because I’m sure
these parts of the movie are still being worked on. But here are a few
of the images I remember. We see her and the other cast members walking
towards almost like a blurry section of land. There’s a shot of Portman
with a machine gun. A shot from inside some kind of big creature’s mouth
of Jennifer Jason Leigh. People in a yard that seems to be made of
vines. A vine-like substance growing on someone’s arm. Lights and colors
and flashes that kind of looked like 2001. And that was that.

And now I'm going to share a video I did find on YouTube, of two very enthusiastic guys who didn't read the book but were nevertheless blown away by the teaser. Put their dialogue next to the quote above, and you might get an idea of how close or far the movie the movie might differ from the book. Also, if you have read the book, these guys' crazy theories will make you fall off your chair laughing.
Right now I'm at roughly the halfway point of "The Power of Positive Slavery." It's going to be a long story, which will be great for you when it finally comes out! The problem is getting it out. I feel like I'm giving birth. :-/ Anyway, I thought I'd gift you with the first couple of sections tonight, just so you have something to play with. This should give you a good idea of where the story will be heading, and you can fantasize about all the nice and nasty little touches I'll throw in along the way.

The wording isn't pinned down yet, but this is how the story begins.

“Not even komodo dragons?”

Ainsley groaned. “Komodo dragons
live in Indonesia, not Polynesia, and don’t act like you didn’t
know that already.”

Gemma had already drunk more wine
than was good for her. Sober, she was a brilliant lawyer. Drunk, she was a very
deliberate airhead. She held her fingers a couple of inches apart and giggled.
“Not even little itty bitty dragons?”

Ainsley was drunk enough, herself,
to brush that off. “Oh, sure,” she said, “we’ve got tons of those. But since
they don’t have wings, we had to come up with a special name for them. We call
them lizards.”

Gemma pretended to pout. “Well, I
don’t see how you can name an island Île des Dragons if you don’t have any real dragons.
Maybe I shouldn’t go after all.”

“I bet you’d go if you knew Chance
Finney would be there.”

Gemma’s eyes widened. “He won’t!”

“He will. He signed up just last
week.”

“So if I go, I get to fuck him?”

“Like I told you, it’s all about
the free love, baby.” Ainsley had never met a genuine hippie in her life and
quickly abandoned the accent. “After a full battery of tests, of course.
We take care of your health and your pleasure. By the time you leave the
island, you’ll be tanned and fit and more mentally stable than you’ve in your
life.”

“You know, that last bit really
does kind of make it sound like a cult.”

Ainsley snorted. “How long have we
known each other? Trust me, Gemma, if I got brainwashed into a cult, you’d be
the very first person to notice. Do I look like a cultist?”

She really didn’t, though Gemma. She looked fit and
happy – too happy, but that was just the wine. The only real change Gemma had
noticed in Ainsley’s personality was the loss of her sense of entitlement.
They’d been shopping earlier in the day, and Ainsley had actually chatted with
some of the sales clerks. Normally she’d have treated them like servants.

Gemma bent close and peered into Ainsley’s eyes.
“Okay, your pupils aren’t spinning, and you haven’t shaved your head or started
wearing funny robes. I guess you’re all right.”

“Damn straight I am! So, are you in? I promise
it’ll be the best vacation you ever had.”

“I thought it was a retreat, not a vacation.”

“It’s both! That’s the beauty of it. And since I’d
be your host, it would be like we were taking a vacation together, with
beautiful scenery, great activities, and some of the hottest guys on the
planet.”

“Don’t forget the mystery dragons that may or may
not exist.”

“Oh, I can’t forget the dragons,” she said,
and grinned. “Now, do you want a chance to fuck Chance, or not?”

“Eww, bad joke, Ainsley. Very bad.”

“Give me a drink. No, sorry, I mean give me a
break. It’s the drinks making me tell bad jokes. But come on, Gemma,
please tell me you’ll come!”

Gemma sighed. “Okay, I suppose I can take the time
off work.”

“That’s my girl!” Ainsley raised her glass. “To Île
des Dragons!”

“Or Île des Lizards!”

They clinked glasses and poured
themselves another round.

*****

It was almost morning before they
said goodnight. Gemma stumbled off to her bedroom singing Chance Finney’s
biggest hit. All she knew was the chorus.

Ainsley slipped into the guest
bedroom and locked the door behind her. Then she stood listening for several
minutes, making sure Gemma wouldn’t come out again. Once she was satisfied, she
dropped her mask and pulled out her cell phone. The wine made it difficult to
dial, and she had a lot of digits to get through; but she couldn’t put this
number in her directory. After three tries, she got through.

The call was picked up on the first
ring. “Result?” said a calm male voice.

“Positive,” she answered flatly.
Then she ended the call and went to bed.

I's called Get Out, it was written and directed by Jordan Peele of the brilliant Key and Peele, it's getting five-star reviews, and it's scary as shit. All that, plus you get non-consensual hypnosis that works. What's not to love? Here's a clip.

Oh, and BTW, this clip is very nearly the only funny one in the movie. The plot is mostly serious and scary, and the guy in the blue T-shirt is the only stereotypical black character (There's exactly one stereotypical racist white character too, so I think they're both written that way on purpose). But the guy in the blue T-shirt is also critical to the plot because, like the stoner in Cabin in the Woods, he's the the only one paranoid enough to see what's going on. (But as another BTW, that's the only way Get Out is like Cabin in the Woods. It's not "meta." It's straight-up horror with a side of racial commentary.)
A couple of weeks ago I asked readers for feedback on three questions related to two stories I'm currently juggling (A question I'll have to ask myself soon is whether to keep juggling or just work on one till it's finished and then move to the other). I've had lots of input now, so here are the things I've decided.

Let's start with Transfixed Part 2. I said that while I'd originally planned to write it as a Choose Your Own Adventure, I was beginning to feel like I was in over my head. So I asked you all how you'd feel about getting a sequel that was an ordinary novelette instead. Nobody was displeased by that idea, and in fact, it sounds people just mainly wanted to get the book quickly. Well, that's what I want to give you, so we're in agreement. Transfixed 2 will be a novelette and not a CYOA.

Now on to the other story. First - and this relates to a post prior to the "feedback" post - I have an official tittle now. Thanks, Jock! It's going to be called The Power of Positive Slavery, and Jock will get a free copy for gifting me with the idea.

As for my questions about the story, this what I've decided based on the advice of people who know a hell of a lot more than I do:

1. The rare form of lighting will be an LED black light. That's a real light source that would damage human eyes in real life, but I'll handwave a filter that makes it safe.

2. The latex worn by the catsuited slaves will be lubed on both the inside and outside because that allows for maximum mobility and shine. It's also nice to know that latex doesn't get too hot too quickly. Really, folks, no matter what kind of kinky shit I write, the only latex I've ever worn were gloves! I'm glad some of you out there are bolder than I am!

Thanks, as always, to everyone who takes the time to comment. :-)

thrallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01228794853493421326noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-540840190634112721.post-73926043040857146142017-02-13T07:21:00.001-05:002017-02-13T07:22:37.981-05:00Feedback needed - really

I have three questions to ask you, and I need lots of answers so I can make the right decisions concerning the two e-books I'm working on now. Really, I do need answers, and I need them to be honest answers. So before I ask, remember that I've set up my blog so that you don't need a Google profile to comment, and you can reply in total anonymity. Now, here are the questions.

1. I need (for a story, not in real life) a kind of
light source that's rare but not dangerous - something like an LED black
light, except that I looked those up and they can damage your eyes. What I'm looking for doesn't have to change the color of the room it's in, but I don't mind if it does. If you know about light sources, what do you suggest?

2. What does it feel like to wear latex, particular a whole catsuit covering face and all? Do you get hot and sweaty? How long can you wear one before you have to take it off? Do you need to be powdered down or lubed up before you get into one?

3. Due to real-life shit storms, it might take me a very long time to write the Transfixed sequel as a Choose Your Own Adventure, which is what I originally planned and what I said I'd do in the "Afterword" section of the book; but I know the people who bought Part 1 are probably annoyed at having to wait so long for a conclusion. So tell me honestly, how would you feel as a reader of Transfixed, Part 1, if I decided to write Part 2 as an ordinary e-book instead? If you haven't read Part 1, just pretend you have and tell me how you'd feel.

Answering these questions will help me complete my next two stories more quickly, so please do answer. Too often I ask for feedback and get nothing.

Thanks, folks.

In between bouts of writing, I've been binging on Cthulhu mythos stories - which in turn, got me rummaging around Deviant Art in search of Old Ones pictures and and whatever else happened to grab my attention. Here's a fraction of the result.

Some of the pictures below became part of the Call of Cthulhu game, and some just stuck in my head because they're hot. But I'm going to refrain, very intentionally, from giving you any context in this blog post. You can imagine whatever scenario fits your fetish; and if you want to know what the artist really intended, you can click the author links at the bottom of this post. The author above left is Dave Palumbo. In the middle, left-to-right, the artists are Jowie Lim, Felicia Cano, and Thaldir.
I need to say a bit more about the painting at right, by Donato Giancola. He's not a fetishist (although he does like robots and all the other SF/F tropes most of us enjoy); he's just an excellent artist whom I follow because I love his work. I'm including this picture because it perfectly feeds my fetish without even trying. But in fact, Giancola says in his description of the piece that it was inspired by a George R. R. Martin short story called "The Glass Flower." That intrigued me enough to make me buy the e-book (It's just $1.99); and I'm happy report that the story is excellent, it involves possession (I know some of you are into that), and Giancola's picture really is just "inspired by" the story. It doesn't spoil the plot at all. But ohh, does it makes me think of other ways the story could have gone!
